Overview

Colorado recognizes home-based education as a legitimate alternative to classroom attendance and states that parents have the primary right and obligation to choose the proper education and training for their children.

Compulsory School Attendance Age

Colorado homeschool notification requirements generally begin when a child reaches age 6. Parents are not required to formally establish the homeschool program until the child reaches age 7. Notification generally ends after age 16.

Homeschool Notification and Enrollment

Colorado requires a parent establishing a nonpublic home-based educational program to provide written notice to a Colorado school district at least 14 days before beginning the program and every year thereafter.

Instructional Days and Hours

Colorado requires at least 172 days of instruction per year averaging at least 4 instructional contact hours per day.

Required Subjects

Colorado homeschool instruction must include reading, writing, speaking and communication skills, mathematics, history, civics, literature, science, and instruction in the United States Constitution.

Attendance and Records

Colorado requires parents to maintain permanent records for each student, including attendance information, test or evaluation results, and immunization records or applicable documentation.

Testing and Academic Evaluation

Colorado requires academic progress evaluation in grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. Parents may use a nationally standardized achievement test or an evaluation by a qualified person.

Parent Teacher Qualifications

Colorado does not require a parent or adult relative providing instruction in a nonpublic home-based educational program to hold a Colorado teaching license.

Curriculum Freedom

Colorado gives homeschool parents broad authority over curriculum and instructional methods as long as the required subject areas are included.

Graduation

Colorado does not issue a state homeschool diploma. Parents may determine when the student has completed the homeschool's graduation requirements and may issue a homeschool diploma.

Alabama Church School Services for Colorado Families

Colorado families may choose Alabama Church School for curriculum, records, transcripts, diplomas, attendance resources, graduation documentation, and educational support. Enrollment does not replace Colorado's annual notice, instructional time, permanent records, or testing/evaluation requirements.
