Overview
Utah has one of the simplest homeschool laws in the country. Parents provide a one-time initial notification to the local school board, and the district is prohibited from supervising or evaluating the homeschool program.
Families may use Alabama Church School for curriculum and academic services, but enrollment with an outside curriculum provider does not replace Utah's one-time notification requirement.
Homeschool Notification
When a parent withdraws an enrolled school-age child for homeschooling, or chooses not to enroll a school-age child, the parent must provide a one-time initial notification to the local school board of the child's district of residence.
The district must maintain a record of the notification and acknowledge receipt within 30 days.
A parent who already provided a qualifying homeschool notification or affidavit on or before May 7, 2025 does not have to submit a new notification simply because the law changed.
Instructional Days and Hours
Utah does not require homeschool families to follow a set number of school days or instructional hours.
School districts may not require homeschool parents to maintain attendance records or records of instruction.
Required Subjects
Utah does not prescribe a specific homeschool curriculum or mandatory statewide homeschool subject list in the ordinary parent-directed homeschool framework.
Attendance and Records
Utah does not require routine homeschool attendance logs, lesson logs, grades, portfolios, or progress reports to be submitted to the school district.
Families should still maintain useful academic records, especially transcripts, course lists, grades, and graduation documentation.
Standardized Testing
Utah does not require independently homeschooled students to participate in statewide assessments.
Homeschool students may voluntarily participate in statewide assessments through a local education agency when they satisfy the applicable homeschool requirements.
Parent Teacher Qualifications
Utah does not require the homeschooling parent to hold a teaching license, college degree, or special training.
Curriculum Freedom
Parents are responsible for choosing the curriculum, instructional materials, teaching methods, and schedule. Local school districts may not supervise or evaluate the homeschool program.
Graduation
Utah does not automatically issue a public-school diploma to an independently homeschooled student.
Parents may establish their own homeschool completion requirements and maintain a transcript and diploma or completion documentation. If a student later seeks public-school credit, the local education agency may evaluate homeschool work under its policies.
