Overview
Wyoming no longer requires families to submit their curriculum annually to the local school district. The homeschool must still provide a sequentially progressive basic academic educational program covering the seven required subjects.
Families may use Alabama Church School for curriculum and academic services, but enrollment with an outside curriculum provider does not replace Wyoming's statutory program requirements or any applicable public-school withdrawal procedure.
Homeschool Notification and Withdrawal
Wyoming no longer requires homeschool families to submit their curriculum annually to the local school district.
A child who has never been enrolled in a public school generally has no separate district-reporting requirement merely because the family begins homeschooling.
If a child under age 18 is being withdrawn from public school and the district has not otherwise been notified that the child is enrolling in another district, private school, or home-based educational program, the parent must meet in person with a district counselor or administrator and provide written consent to the withdrawal.
Instructional Days and Hours
Wyoming does not prescribe a specific number of homeschool instructional days or daily instructional hours for a home-based educational program.
Required Subjects
The homeschool must provide a sequentially progressive basic academic educational program containing fundamental instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, civics, history, literature, and science.
Wyoming law does not require a homeschool to include any concept, topic, or practice that conflicts with the family's religious doctrines.
Attendance and Records
Wyoming does not require routine submission of homeschool attendance logs, grades, portfolios, or progress reports.
Families should maintain their own academic records, including courses, grades, transcripts, work samples, and graduation documentation.
Standardized Testing
Wyoming does not require homeschool students who are primarily homeschooled to participate in state standardized testing.
Homeschool students may voluntarily participate in Wyoming state assessments without charge by working with the local school district.
Parent Teacher Qualifications
Wyoming's home-based education law does not require the parent or designated instructor to hold a state teaching certificate or college degree.
Curriculum Freedom
Parents may choose curriculum, educational materials, online programs, workbooks, tutors, parent-created lessons, and other teaching methods.
The program must include the seven required fundamental subject areas, but it is not required to align with Wyoming's public-school content standards.
Graduation
Wyoming considers homeschools non-accredited private schools. The state does not issue a Wyoming public-school diploma to an independently homeschooled student.
Families should establish their own completion requirements and maintain a detailed transcript. Some commercial or outside educational programs may issue their own diplomas based on their program requirements.
Families interested in Wyoming's Hathaway Scholarship should review current scholarship eligibility requirements early in the student's high-school years.
