Overview

New Mexico recognizes a home school as a parent-operated home study program providing a basic academic educational program. State law requires annual registration, specified core subjects, immunization records or a lawful waiver, and a minimum qualification for the person providing instruction.

Families may also choose Alabama Church School for curriculum and academic services while still meeting New Mexico's own registration and recordkeeping requirements.

Compulsory School Attendance Age

New Mexico's compulsory-attendance framework generally applies to school-age persons as defined by state law.

Families should verify the child's current compulsory-attendance status when beginning home education.

Homeschool Registration and Notification

The person operating or intending to operate a home school must submit the New Mexico Public Education Department home school registration form within 30 days after establishing the homeschool.

The home school must then be renewed with the Department on or before August 1 of each subsequent year of operation.

New Mexico maintains an online Home School System for registration and renewal.

Instructional Days and Hours

New Mexico's homeschool statute does not prescribe a specific number of homeschool instructional days or daily instructional hours in the same manner as public-school attendance requirements.

Required Subjects

New Mexico defines a home school as a home study program that provides a basic academic educational program including:

• Reading • Language Arts • Mathematics • Social Studies • Science

Attendance and Records

The homeschool must maintain records of the student's disease immunizations or a lawful waiver of the immunization requirement.

Families should additionally maintain attendance, grades, courses, report cards, transcripts, samples of work, and graduation records for academic and future-use purposes.

Standardized Testing

New Mexico's general home-school statute does not impose an annual standardized-testing requirement on every independently homeschooled student.

Parent Teacher Qualifications

Instruction must be provided by a person who possesses at least a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Curriculum Freedom

Parents may select curriculum and instructional materials, but the educational program must include the core academic areas contained in New Mexico's statutory definition of a home school.

Graduation

Independent home schools establish their own academic completion requirements. Families should maintain a complete high school transcript showing courses, grades, credits, and graduation date.

Postsecondary institutions, employers, the military, scholarship programs, and licensing bodies may have their own documentation requirements.

Alabama Church School Services for New Mexico Families

New Mexico families may choose Alabama Church School for complete curriculum, enrollment documentation, attendance resources, academic records, report cards, transcripts, diplomas, graduation documentation, and educational support.

Enrollment with Alabama Church School does not replace the New Mexico parent's responsibility to register and renew the homeschool with the Public Education Department, maintain immunization or waiver records, and meet the state's other home-school requirements.
