Overview
Arizona allows parents and guardians to educate their children at home through a legally recognized homeschool program.
Under Arizona law, a homeschool is a nonpublic school conducted primarily by the parent, guardian, or other person who has custody of the child, or nonpublic instruction provided in the child's home.
Compulsory School Attendance Age
Arizona's compulsory attendance law generally applies to children between the ages of 6 and 16. Arizona law also allows a parent of a homeschooled child who has not reached age 8 by September 1 to delay formal homeschool instruction until age 8, while still filing the required affidavit.
Homeschool Notification and Enrollment
Arizona requires the parent or person having custody of a homeschooled child to file an Affidavit of Intent to Homeschool with the county school superintendent, generally within 30 days after the child begins homeschooling.
The affidavit is generally a one-time filing. If homeschooling is terminated, the parent must notify the county school superintendent within 30 days. If homeschooling later resumes, another affidavit must be filed.
Instructional Days and Hours
Arizona does not establish a specific number of instructional days or instructional hours for a homeschool.
Required Subjects
Arizona law specifically requires instruction in reading, grammar, mathematics, social studies, and science.
Attendance and Records
Arizona does not require homeschool parents to submit routine attendance reports, report cards, grades, portfolios, or academic progress reports to the state. Families should maintain organized educational records.
Standardized Testing
Arizona does not require homeschooled students to participate in state standardized testing simply because they are homeschooled.
Parent Teacher Qualifications
Arizona does not require a parent or guardian teaching their own child through a homeschool to hold a teaching certificate, college degree, complete teacher training, or obtain curriculum approval.
Curriculum Freedom
Arizona does not require state-approved curriculum, public school textbooks, a specific online program, an accredited curriculum, or a particular teaching method. Required subject areas must still be covered.
Graduation
Arizona does not operate a separate state graduation system for independently homeschooled students. Parents may establish the student's high school program and graduation requirements.
Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Accounts
Arizona operates an Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA). ESA participation is legally distinct from formal homeschool status and may involve different requirements.
