Overview
Wisconsin requires parents operating a home-based private educational program to file an annual PI-1206 Homeschool Enrollment Report through the DPI's HOMER system by October 15 and to provide at least 875 instructional hours in six core subjects.
Families may use Alabama Church School for curriculum and academic services, but enrollment with an outside curriculum provider does not replace Wisconsin's annual PI-1206 filing or statutory program requirements.
Annual Homeschool Enrollment Report — PI-1206
Wisconsin requires the parent or guardian to file the online PI-1206 Homeschool Enrollment Report through the Department of Public Instruction's HOMER system every school year.
The annual deadline is October 15.
The report for a new school year becomes available beginning July 1. If a student is withdrawn from public or private school after October 15, the PI-1206 should be submitted or updated on or before the date the student stops attending that school.
Parents should print and keep a copy of the submitted PI-1206 for their permanent records.
Instructional Days and Hours
A Wisconsin home-based private educational program must provide at least 875 hours of instruction during each school year.
Wisconsin law does not require those 875 hours to be divided into a specific number of school days or daily instructional hours.
Required Subjects
Wisconsin requires a sequentially progressive curriculum of fundamental instruction in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and health.
The law protects religious freedom by providing that a private or home-based program is not required to include concepts, topics, or practices that conflict with its religious doctrines.
Attendance and Records
Wisconsin does not require routine submission of daily attendance logs, lesson plans, grades, portfolios, or progress reports to DPI.
DPI recommends that families maintain records showing the required 875 hours and the sequential curriculum, along with courses, grades, report cards, transcripts, and graduation documentation.
Standardized Testing
Wisconsin does not require independently homeschooled students to take annual state or nationally standardized achievement tests solely because they are homeschooled.
Parent Teacher Qualifications
Wisconsin imposes no minimum educational requirement on the parent providing a home-based private educational program.
Parents are not required to hold a teaching certificate or license.
Curriculum Freedom
Parents are responsible for selecting and obtaining curriculum and instructional materials.
Wisconsin allows parents to provide instruction themselves or designate another person to provide instruction.
Families may use out-of-state correspondence or online programs, but the parent remains responsible for ensuring the overall program satisfies Wisconsin's homeschool requirements.
Graduation
Wisconsin does not issue a state public-school diploma simply because a student completes a home-based private educational program.
Families should establish graduation requirements appropriate to the student's educational and postsecondary goals and maintain a complete transcript, course history, grades, credits, and graduation documentation.
Alabama Church School Services for Wisconsin Families
Wisconsin families may choose Alabama Church School for complete curriculum, academic records, attendance tools, report cards, transcripts, diplomas, graduation documentation, and educational support.
Enrollment with Alabama Church School does not replace the parent's responsibility to file the annual PI-1206, provide at least 875 instructional hours, and ensure the program includes the required Wisconsin subject areas.
