Overview
Delaware allows parents and legal guardians to educate their children at home through a legally recognized homeschool. Under Delaware law, a homeschool is considered a nonpublic school.
Compulsory School Attendance Age
Delaware compulsory attendance generally applies beginning at age 5 and through age 16, subject to statutory exceptions and withdrawal rules for older students.
Homeschool Registration and Enrollment
Delaware requires a homeschool to be registered with the Delaware Department of Education as a nonpublic school. A parent opens the homeschool through the Nonpublic School System and enrolls the child in that school.
Annual Enrollment Reporting
Delaware requires nonpublic schools, including homeschools, to report student enrollment every year, currently no later than September 30.
Annual Attendance Reporting
Delaware requires annual attendance reporting, currently due no later than July 31.
Instructional Days and Hours
Delaware does not require a homeschool or other nonpublic school to operate for a specific minimum number of instructional days. Families may establish their own school calendar.
Required Subjects
Delaware law requires regular and thorough instruction in the subjects prescribed for Delaware public schools in a manner suitable for children of the same age and stage of advancement.
Attendance and Records
Families must maintain sufficient attendance information to complete annual attendance reporting and should maintain academic records such as grades, courses, transcripts, test results, and graduation records.
Standardized Testing
Delaware does not require independently homeschooled students to participate in the state's regular public-school standardized testing program simply because they are homeschooled.
Parent Teacher Qualifications
Delaware does not require the parent operating an ordinary single-family homeschool to hold a Delaware teaching certificate.
Curriculum Freedom
The Delaware Department of Education does not provide, endorse, approve, accredit, or monitor the curriculum used by an ordinary nonpublic homeschool.
Graduation
Delaware does not issue a state diploma to independently homeschooled students simply because they complete homeschool education. The homeschool may establish its own academic program and graduation requirements.
