Overview

Alaska allows parents and legal guardians to educate their children at home with very few state-imposed requirements.

Under Alaska law, a child is exempt from compulsory public school attendance when the child is being educated in the child's home by a parent or legal guardian.

Families do not have to enroll in a public correspondence program, private school, cover school, or umbrella school in order to legally homeschool in Alaska.

Compulsory School Attendance Age

Alaska's compulsory attendance law generally applies to children between the ages of 7 and 16. A child being educated at home by a parent or legal guardian is exempt from the public school attendance requirement.

Homeschool Notification and Enrollment

Alaska does not require a parent homeschooling under the parent-directed homeschool exemption to register the homeschool with the state, file an annual notice of intent, obtain approval from the local school district, enroll in a public correspondence program, or enroll with a private school or cover school.

Instructional Days and Hours

Alaska does not establish a specific number of instructional days or instructional hours for families homeschooling independently under the parent-directed homeschool provision.

Required Subjects

Alaska's basic parent-directed homeschool law does not impose a specific statewide list of required homeschool subjects. Parents have broad authority to determine the educational program used for their children.

Attendance and Records

Alaska does not require independently homeschooling parents to submit routine attendance reports, grades, portfolios, or progress reports to the state or local school district. Families are strongly encouraged to maintain educational records.

Standardized Testing

Alaska does not require independently homeschooled students to participate in annual state standardized testing simply because they are homeschooled.

Parent Teacher Qualifications

Alaska does not require a parent or legal guardian homeschooling their own child under the parent-directed homeschool exemption to hold a teaching certificate, college degree, complete teacher training, or obtain approval from the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development.

Curriculum Freedom

Alaska gives independently homeschooling parents broad freedom to choose their child's curriculum and educational methods. Families are not required to use state-approved curriculum, public school textbooks, a district correspondence curriculum, an accredited curriculum, or a specific online program.

Graduation

Alaska does not operate a separate state homeschool graduation program for independently homeschooled students. Parents may establish the homeschool's graduation requirements and should maintain a complete high school transcript.

Public Correspondence Programs Are Different

Alaska has state-funded public correspondence programs that allow students to complete school primarily from home. These are public school programs and are different from independent homeschooling.

Alabama Church School Services for Alaska Families

Alaska families may choose Alabama Church School for curriculum, enrollment documentation, attendance resources, academic records, report cards, transcripts, diplomas, graduation documentation, student records, and educational support. Enrollment is optional and does not replace any responsibility the parent has under Alaska law.
